Achilles is a legendary warrior known for his participation in the war against Troy. He is the ancestor of Archie.

Appearance[]

Achilles is a tall, handsome, and muscular young man with medium length red hair. His attire appears to be his battle armor from the war although he is bare foot with an arrow stuck in his right heel.

In the Series[]

When Archie was brought to New Olympia but didn't immediately believe the truth of magic and gods, Chiron warned him not to make the same mistakes Achilles did in falling victim to his own anger and mistrust.[1]

Achilles I

Achilles in Flashback

When Archie and Atlanta were looking through old relics, Archie found a spear belonging to Achilles and emblazoned with his emblem. Archie imagined Achilles wielding the spear and tried mimicking him.[2]

After the heroes recovered from their amnesia caused by the River Lethe, Archie met and spoke with Achilles over an unknown subject; suspected to be the reason behind his fear of water.[3]

Mythology[]

Achilles was a hero of the Trojan War and greatest warrior of Homer's Iliad. Achilles was said to be a demigod; his mother was the nymph Thetis, and his father, Peleus, was the king of the Myrmidons. Thetis anointed Achilles with ambrosia and passes the child through the fire to make him immortal but Peleus, appalled, stops her, leaving only his heel mortal.

Achilles’ most notable feat during the Trojan War was the slaying of the Trojan hero Hector outside the gates of Troy. Although the death of Achilles is not presented in the Iliad, other sources concur that he was killed near the end of the Trojan War by Paris, who shot him in the heel with an arrow. It is stated that Achilles was invulnerable in all of his body except for his heel. Because of his death from a small wound in the heel, the term Achilles heel has come to mean a person's point of weakness.

Scamander fought on the side of the Trojans during the Trojan War, after Achilles insulted him. Scamander was also said to have attempted to kill Achilles three times, and the hero was only saved due to the intervention of Hera, Athena, and Hephaestus.

Trivia[]

  • Achilles's red hair may be a reference to the tale of his hiding on the island of Skyros. As he was prophesied to die in the Trojan War, his mother sought to protect him by hiding him on the island disguised as a girl named Pyrrha, meaning "red-haired".
